“A Sneak Peek into The Real You?”

By Payal Jethra

It’s time to call the estate agent and have him find buyers for that farm house in the outskirts of the metropolitan city you’ve been renting out for years now. And what about the shiny gray Toyota Suzuki you’ve planned to drive to the beaches this long weekend with a bunch of cackling toddlers in the back seat? No no don’t fret, this article doesn’t suggest that you go back to the drawing board. Unless, of course, you’re all set to turn a new leaf, to rediscover your inner self, to meet “The Real You”. Does this idea of renaissance excite or send shivers down your spine? Read on about how a cardiac arrest shook a colleague of mine to the core and how she saw the incident as the birth of a new her.

If the profession or life that you’re living at the moment, is getting you nowhere, if you feel like health, wealth, relationships and career have lost their charm, if the prospect of creating a new you sounds enthralling to you, if turning a new leaf and starting life afresh is what you’ve been yearning for…. then read on till the hidden answers to all your questions secretly unravel the mysteries of your life!

She was apparently the most successful and sought after role model in the team. With professional accolades and laurels scattered all over the office and living room, Natasha Agarwal was every fresher’s dream. A loving family, a dream palatial home downtown, a couple of four-wheelers; one for each family member, two beautiful children…..what more do you suppose one could ask for? And then one fine morning……came a perfect storm. On the verge of cracking a million-dollar deal with the international team, whilst sipping a cup of coffee during a video conference, she suddenly dropped off, the color vanishing from her cheeks. A team of para medics was immediately summoned and she was rushed to a nearby hospital. This seems to be the scenario with most of us who have inadvertently been putting the cart before the horse.

Three months down the line, Natasha has now turned a new leaf. Having been with a family counselor for a couple of weeks now, she has discovered a path to inner peace “through transformation of energy. The real her” Natasha Agarwal, Masters and PH. D in Marketing, Director and CEO of her own billion-dollar company is an unparalleled example of a marketing professional. During her youth she opted for the marketing stream because of her top MBA grades and medals through every semester. At that point of life, she had a clear cut intention of serving humanity by bringing her personal skills and potential to good use. And indeed she undoubtedly was off to a great start. Having recruited more than two thousand students who weren’t able to make it to Universities abroad, Natasha did bring light to dark souls by mentoring them and thereby creating employment for more than a hundred families.  Somewhere along the path, Agarwal unconsciously let fame, ambition and popularity and the promise that the profession brought, lure her into adopting a lopsided approach to life. Little did she realize whilst getting herself entangled in the rat race of ambition that gradually but slowly, she had begun to bark up the wrong tree. The obsession for professional accomplishments had started to consume her and she began to bite off more than she could chew. Her working hours grew by leaps and bounds and disconnected her from her own inner self, loved ones, family and the little precious gifts and pleasures of life began to vanish day after day. When reprimanded by her children and asked to slow down the pace, she brushed aside the well-meaning suggestions of those closest to her for the illusive promise of peace and prosperity that professional success often brings.

Coming back to Natasha Agarwal, you must be eager to know where she stands today, aren’t you? Well, she’s awakened to a new way of living, having discovered her inner self. She couldn’t be more grateful! And guess what? She has now gone on to pass on this “light and Might” to all those who have been connecting with her. Today’s Natasha scheduled an appointment with yesterday’s Natasha and together they chalked out a 24-hour planner that now works as the perfect balance between her personal and professional self. She begins her day with waking up to wish God Good morning and expressing gratitude for the gifts of life. This followed by twenty minutes of meditation, sunbathing for some time, practicing breathing effectively, fresh vegetarian diet through the day, mild form of exercise or walk through the park, giving the mind a break at the end of every hour and drawing the stern line between family time and work time have been strategies she has adopted in her own life and the lives of all the employees recruited with her. They now work 9 to 5 and Natasha and all the employees of her organization call it a day at 5 then energizing their minds and spending time with themselves and their families. Vow! Isn't this the perfect model of a Transformational leader for all of us to emulate?

All of us at some point find ourselves at crossroads such as this and the choices we make shape our future years and thereby define the contribution we as employees make to the organization we work with. So if these have been your feelings lately? Feeling emotionally depleted and spiritually drained, like you’re hitting that dead end time and again and getting nowhere in life, you’ll want to give reinventing yourself a thought.

In a world where most of us are looking to fulfill ourselves with shallow materialistic possessions, evading The elephant in the room, Natasha’s life is an eye-opener for us who see ourselves climbing the career ladder in our organization.  After all, how can we expect to climb the ladder until we’ve strengthened our muscles? Let by gone be by gone. Let’s decide today, this very moment that we’re going to put the past behind us. As quote Robin S. Sharma, considered to be one of the top 5 leadership experts in the world, author of the book, “THE MONK WHO SOLD HIS FERRARI” puts it, "Every event has a purpose and every setback its lesson. I have realized that failure, whether of the personal, professional or even spiritual kind, is essential to personal expansion. It brings inner growth and a whole host of psychic rewards. Never regret your past. Rather, embrace it as the teacher that it is." So let’s thank the past for its gifts and lessons learnt.

Often, personal and professional challenges, situations and circumstances seem to overpower us and close in. Can you imagine the abundant power and energy that lies within us, like untapped gold resources at the bottom of unexplored gold mines?

For an organization, its human resource is the most valuable capital. In our turn, each of us employees can take this important step toward creating a work life balance so that in turn, we give our best selves to our professional assignments.

The journey of self-transformation is one that must be taken alone. I believe each one of us owes it to ourselves and to the organization we work with, to undertake this exciting journey of self-transformation. Once you’ve got past the initial hitches and moved out of the overpowering old habits and thought-processes and ideas that were gripping you in shackles, you’ll fall in love with yourself all over again. Only in a matter of days, you’ll be light as an Angel, passing on the Light of this Knowledge to all around you.

The ball is in your court….The saying goes…
A stitch in time saves nine!

Happy Reinventing yourself!
