What is a Stye?

What are the signs and symptoms?

It begins with a feeling of tenderness in the affected eyelid, which slowly develops into a raised, swollen bump on the upper or lower eyelid. The affected area would be warm to touch, it is painful (but more due to the sense of discomfort) and is often red and angry looking.

How is it diagnosed?

Patients often request an examination after an episode of pain and swelling of the lid. The doctor can make the diagnosis during a simple examination of the eyelids.

How is it treated?

At home: In the early stages, styes may be treated at home with the repeated use of warm compresses for 15-20 minutes followed by several minutes of light lid massage. This helps to reduce the swelling and makes the lid more comfortable. 
At a medical center: However, if the stye does not diminish or recurs, medical attention may be necessary. This may include draining the stye along with the use of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medications.
