Twenty-seven-year-old Darshan Kamble was born sighted in Mumbai, Maharashtra. His father is a truck driver and his mother, a homemaker. 
Darshan was born as a weak child and kept in the incubator for several days after birth. He developed some vision problems at the time, which went unnoticed by the family. As he grew up, he was enrolled in a regular school where he studied till Class IV. 

Braille boards to make Alipore zoo friendly for visually impaired

Kolkata: Alipore zoological garden, the  country’s oldest zoo, is going to install boards carrying  names and descriptions of animals in Braille to help  visually challenged visitors.
Zoo director Subhankar  Sengupta announced the decision after he met a group of  visually challenged students who came to visit the zoo for  the first time on Wednesday. “We have planned  Braille boardswith names and details of animals at  every cage

Thirty-five-year-old Sarika Uike belongs to Yavatmal, Maharashtra. She was born sighted to a low income family. After completing her Class 12 in 2007, Sarika wanted to support her father and she managed to get a job as a resource teacher on a caste quota. But it was a temporary posting at a low salary because she hadn’t completed her D.Ed.
Once she completed her degree in 2016, Sarika was made a permanent employee and offered a decent compensation as well. But two years later, life took an adverse turn and Sarika lost her eyesight due to a prolonged migraine problem.

Scribe scarcity worries PU’s visually impaired students.
Chandigarh: As Panjab University students prepare for upcoming exams, their visually impaired classmates are facing an additional challenge — finding a scribe who could put on paper what they have studied.
Though the appeal made by Himachal Pradesh Student Union (HPSU), which has also created a database to compile a list of volunteers, has received a positive response from 100 students, it is to be seen how many of them actually show up.

Fixing the error and relieving her of anxiety!

Twenty-eight-year-old Shobha Pawar hails from a village in Raigad, Maharashtra. She belongs to a low income family. Shobha was born sighted but when she was in Class 6, she got high fever, after which she lost her eyesight.
As a result, she had to drop out of school, unaware of any special schools for children with blindness. She hopelessly remained confined to her home for the next four years, because her family did not know how anyone could lead a life with blindness.

How visually impaired women are playing a key role in early diagnosis of breast cancer

After an eight-month training period, Nisha was hired by CK Birla Hospital in Punjabi Bagh in its oncology department where she works from 9 am to 5 pm, detecting breast cancer in women visiting for a checkup.

Holding hands, Nisha and Neha are waiting at the reception of a Delhi hospital. For Nisha, 22, it is her first day at work. Neha, her senior with six years of experience, has come to support her younger friend. Both are vision-impaired medical tactile examiners (MTE) and can detect what those with vision may often miss – tumours in the breast.

Belying stereotypes and shaping other lives

Rohini Bhutekar was born blind to a low income family in Jalna, Maharashtra. Despite the lack of awareness around living life with blindness in her community, and coming from a village, Rohini aspired to study and become independent. 
Initially she went to a special school for blind girls where she studied till Class 8. Afterwards, her teachers encouraged her to go to Mumbai for higher education in mainstream institutions. Rohini followed other blind girls and against all odds, she came to Mumbai.
