Work on ways to provide equal opportunities for disabled: HC

Alarmed that only 25 per cent of the posts reserved for the physically-challenged in Class-I category government jobs have been filled up owing to non-availability and non-suitability of candidates, the Himachal High Court on Wednesday directed the state government and Public Service Commission to work on alternatives to provide equal opportunities to the disabled.

Visually Impaired Man on Jakarta Transportation Council

A visually impaired man became the first person with a disability to sit on the Jakarta Transportation Council as the capital swore in 15 new council members on Tuesday.

Jaka Ahmad, 36, from the Jakarta chapter of the Indonesian Association for the Visually Impaired (Pertuni), said that he would fight for the rights of all people with disabilities during his two-year term as a member of the council known as DTKJ.

Visually impaired explore world with Braille books

The Jagruti School for Blind Girls at Alandi in Pune district has started a Braille press along with digital library and publication centre, which is the third of its kind facility in Maharashtra.

The Braille Book Publishing Centre was inaugurated on the auspicious day of Gudi Padwa on March 23 by printing verses from the famous commentary work on the Gita, ‘Dnyaneshwari’ by Saint Dnyaneshwar.

Early intervention centres for visually challenged

In a gesture aimed at improving the lot of differently abled persons in the State, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday unveiled a number of schemes including the launch of early intervention centre for visually challenged in 20 districts, petrol scooter for physically challenged and interest-free loans for self-employment.

A government press release said the intervention centres would come up in districts including Chennai, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Theni, Tiruchi, Kanyakumari, Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Kancheepuram, Karur and Nagapattinam.

Newspapers recently reported Jeeja Ghosh of the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy being asked to get off a SpiceJet Calcutta-Goa flight. Shortly after boarding she was made to get off the plane by flight attendants who brought her to the terminal building. The pilot refused to fly the plane with her on board. His reason was that she appeared to be suffering from disability.

Centre pat for disability battle

The Centre has lauded the efforts of the disability commissioner for his efforts to redress grievances of the disabled in Jharkhand, which has outshone other states in providing justice to a section of society that is often ignored.

A letter dated March 12 from the office of the chief commissioner for persons with disabilities, under the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment, hailed Satish Chandra for successful use of “mobile courts” in Jharkhand.
