Steering in the right direction

When Bala Subramaniam from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at the age of eight, his future looked bleak. However, the disorder leading to gradual vision loss did not deter him from excelling in studies. With his knack for Physics, he got admitted into a Mechanical Engineering course. Of course his parents were concerned and uncertain about the choice of career, given his deteriorating vision.

21 years old today, Bala has nearly completed his course and started simultaneous preparation for UPSC examination. But prolonged hours of studying from textbooks and computer screens, straining his eyesight, has aggravated the vision loss. Apart from magnifying the text, Bala was in need of proper solutions to overcome his reading and writing challenges.

His online search for resources to aid his learning led him to Eyeway. Our Helpdesk counsellor connected him to a visually impaired trainer who is helping Bala access computers through screen reading software. Eyeway has also recommended him to enrol for free coaching classes for visually impaired UPSC aspirants.

Now, as Bala navigates confidently through everyday life, he credits this to proper guidance from Eyeway, something that he missed out on earlier in life. Vision loss can be a traumatizing experience. Timely intervention through rehabilitation and training can equip a person to live an independent and dignified life.
