Two years ago, a student with 100% visual impairment came to Pune from Nanded with hopes of pursuing Psychology and becoming a music therapist. With her, her brother and mother also shifted to support her in the new city. However, the 20-year-old is now studying Political Science at one of the top SPPU-affiliated colleges instead.

Panaji: What this 15-year-old  accomplished is no mean feat for someone who is 100%  visually impaired. Saish Gauthankar not only took the  Goa Board’s Class X examination  without depending on a scribe to write out his answers  or him, but attained a score of 80%, reports Lisa Monteiro.
This makes Gauthankar the first student in the state to  clear the Goa Board’s Class X examination using a  computer and not opting for the traditional use of  a scribe.

Disney Star and India Signing Hands (ISH) announce Indian Sign Language (ISL) feed for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup starting June 2. Available for 10 matches, including India’s, semis, and finals. ISL feed and audio descriptive feed on Disney+ Hotstar and Star Sports Network. First time ICC Men’s T20 World Cup features sign language and descriptive commentary, enhancing accessibility for deaf, hard-of-hearing, and visually impaired users. Disney+ Hotstar first to offer ISL for LIVE cricket.

Star announces sign language commentary for India matches at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

The upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, in June, is going to feel different. For the first time in the history of the cricket World Cups – both 50-over and 20-over versions – the deaf and visually impaired people of country will be able to experience their favourite sport better than ever as the broadcasters – Star Sports and Disney+ Hotstar – have added features to interpret live commentary for those who can’t hear or see.

15-year-old Vanshika says she wants to crack the UPSC Civil Services Examination and become an IAS officer.

Vanshika (15) who was born with a visual impairment scored 96% in the CBSE Class 10 results that were declared on Monday. A student of the Institute for the Blind, Sector 26, Chandigarh, Vanshika says she wants to crack the UPSC Civil Service Examination and become an IAS officer.

She aspires to work towards the empowerment of visually impaired students and make a friendly environment for them. (Handout)

12 visually impaired students successfully clear West Bengal HS board exam

This year, 12 visually impaired students appeared for the West Bengal Class 12 board examination. All of them have successfully cleared the examination with Grade A and above.

  • WBCHSE declared the West Bengal Class 12 Result 2024 on May 8
  • 12 visually impaired students also appeared for the board examination
  • Out of them, Rashida Khatun secured the top position with 416 marks out of 500

Germany Develops Device For Visually Impaired

With the help of modern technology, even the visually impaired can now try their hand at sports of shooting. Germany has developed a device for the visually impaired. This device has been brought to India for the first time and given to the visually impaired in Pune. In shooting, the target is identified and aimed through binoculars. The same technique has been developed by these devices, one part of this device is in the rifle and the other part is on the headphones placed on the ear.

People with disabilities to get quotas in all trains irrespective of fare concessions

Four specially designed seats earmarked for people with disabilities in Vande Bharat Express trains; Verified Indian Railways Unique Identity Cards essential for availing quota 

The Ministry of Railways has approved quotas for people with disabilities (PwDs) in all trains, irrespective of whether any concessional fare facility is available or not.

According to railway sources, the PwD quota will be earmarked in all reserved Express/Mail trains, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Humsafar, Gatimaan, and Vande Bharat express trains.

Fifty-year-old Om Prakash is a resident of Durg district in Chhattisgarh. He was born with an eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa, which results in gradual sight loss. Up till Class X, Om Prakash was able to attend regular school alongside sighted children. But as his vision began to deteriorate, he was unable to study in a mainstream classroom. Due to lack of awareness regarding resources to enable a person with vision impairment to pursue education, he had to drop out and discontinue his studies.

Guiding towards self-employment

Thirty-six-year-old Venkatesh A lives with his family in South Karnataka. He was born with a degenerative eye condition which resulted in gradual sight loss. Venkatesh could only study till Class 8 due to his parents’ poor financial condition, and he started working from an early age.
 
He worked as a labourer, loading goods into a lorry, but as his eyesight deteriorated, he couldn’t perform that job. Desperate to make ends meet, for his wife and young daughter, he was desperately looking for employment options.
