Thirty-three-year-old Inder Singh Bahera is a resident of Uttar Pradesh. As a person with 100% blindness, Inder never really explored ways of self-reliance. He was dependent on the money he received in the form of disability pension to meet his daily needs.
When he didn’t receive the pension in his bank account for three consecutive months, he was left in a dire state. He reached out to the Eyeway Helpdesk to report the issue and seek some resolution. His case was forwarded to our Advocacy Officer who contacted the Social Welfare Officer in his state.
Our counsellor received a positive response from his office, assuring swift action in the matter. The department looked into Inder’s documents, verified all details and his outstanding pension amount was released shortly.
However, during these interactions, the counsellor pushed Inder Singh to become independent and take up some form of employment. Initially the idea was met with resistance but slowly Inder started seeing merit in it. He decided to teach young children in a school located in Vrindavan. While his salary is not much, he gets support for his accommodation and meals. Additionally, he also has the regularized pension to meet expenses.
In this case Eyeway not only resolved an immediate challenge but also showed an alternate path of existence to Inder Singh, a life with dignity.
