Pune: Breaking stereotypes, two visually-challenged youngsters from Pune have achieved their dream of becoming radio jockeys (RJs).
Divya Thorat (19) and Priyanka and Priyanka Gaikwad (24), students of NFBM Jagriti School For Blind Girls, Alandi, were the only ones to be selected from the state by Radio Udaan, an inclusive online radio station for people with disabilities, through a voice test in February.
The two youngsters learned the basics of voice culture at the skill development centre of the National Federation of the Blind Maharashtra (NFBM).
The centre was started in 2020 to widen the boundary of career options for visually challenged students.
“I was always interested in anchoring and wanted to become an RJ. I was looking for opportunities before I got through this. Our training is going to start from next week virtually,” said Divya.
“I completed my graduation in in economics but was always keen on working in various other spheres. A few from my school encouraged me to sing or anchor programmes, and I finally found my calling,” said Priyanka.
“At the skill development centre, we are determined to create different career paths for students. We want to play by their strengths. They have a natural flair for learning new languages and music and can be good comperes,” said Aarti Takawane, head of the skill development centre at NFBM.
Divya and Priyanka underwent a seven-day voice modulation training at Radio Udaan.
We started Radio Udaan in 2014 for those with disabilities. Divya and Priyanka applied online on our site and then we conducted their voice test through which they got selected. We will train them for radio shows,” said Danish Mahajan, founder, Radio Udaan, who is also visually challenged.
The youngsters will be trained first and then taught editing and other necessary modules related to anchoring following which they will be on air.
