Art experience is open to all

Mon, 07/23/2012 - 13:06 -- admin

This November, at the ‘Johannesburg (South Africa) Art Gallery’, visually impaired people were given an opportunity to discover the world of art.

The workshop saw participants explore alphabets in Braille, artist Willem Boshoff's sculptural pieces among other things. The event also had participants create original art piece in clay based on their experience and imagination.

The Johannesburg Art Gallery workshop is the brainchild of gallery curator Prince Dube, who was inspired by a similar event he attended in Sweden. The gallery is intent on ensuring that the art experience is open to all. "We want to create 'blind artists'," said Dube. "After participants experience other people's artworks by touch, we want to encourage them to produce some (by) themselves."

The workshop was held as part of the ‘International Day of Disabled People‘, which takes place on 3 December. It was held in partnership with the ‘Johannesburg Society for the Blind’.
