Audio Description movie screening at Mitra Jyothi, Bangalore on 8th Sep'18.

Audio description of films for the visually impaired initiative is driven by Saksham and 26 films have been done till date.

Films are an integral part of our culture and society. Cinema gives us the opportunity to socialize with friends, family, and others to collectively laugh, applaud, and share similar emotions. Films are an important source of both entertainment and information. They are an effective medium of disseminating information on various subjects like history, mythology, politics, science, technology, sports, and so on.

Yet there is a section of society who is deprived of this enriching experience of cinema.

Persons with visual impairment often have to rely on their sighted companions to explain the less wordy sections of the film so that they don’t miss out on critical details.

Once society accepts that blind persons rely on cinema for their dose of amusement, myriad ways of making cinema accessible can be explored and used to make the medium inclusive.

This can be achieved by *adding audio description to non-verbal parts of the movie and by adding same language subtitling for the dialogues and key sounds. The process is fairly standardized as these are well adopted in several countries. In India too Saksham has made a beginning to this and hope to achieve a vision that ever movie produced in the country would be created with audio description and closed captioning.

As part of it “Hichki”, hindi movie will be screened at Mitra Jyothi Auditorium with audio description on 8th Sep 2018 at 11.30 AM. Lunch will be provided during intermission.
