Binod Behari Mukherjee and his works

Mon, 07/23/2012 - 11:53 -- admin

Blind artist Binod Behari Mukherjee is remembered as an eminent artist who helped make Santiniketan the most important centre of art in India.

Now his precious pieces of art are displayed at an exhibition at National Gallary for Modern Art, New delhi.

Benodbehari started with sketches, watercolors, moved to tempera on wood, works on silk, textile block prints and finally paper cut works. After his paper cut works range of work called ‘The Inner Eye’, he turned completely blind. Filmmaker Satyajit Ray was so impressed by his work that he made a 22-minute film only on the works.

Mukherjee’s name however, is probably unheard of right now because his canvases are just waiting to break a record till all of them start surfacing.

"His work does figure in sales, auctions but very highly priced,” artist, Prof Gulammohammed Sheikh said.

Highly priced would actually mean running in a few crores. But if owning a national treasure in art is your cup of tea then keep an eye on Binod Behari Mukherjee. The exhibition is on till 11th February, 2007.
