Blind people trained online as psychoanalysts

The first batch of 156 people in Beijing have completed an online training and passed final tests qualifying them as psychoanalysts. Wang Jianjun, official, China Disabled Persons Federation (C.D.P.F.), said 50 others were still continuing with the training. He added that the training is the first of its kind, which started in October 2004 and drew more than 200 blind students from 20 municipalities and provinces.<br><br> The extensive course covered under the training included subjects such as, basic psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, mental health and handicaps, as well as professional ethics and diagnostic skills of psychoanalysts.<br><br> To aid students pursue the course, multimedia talking books were provided to them. These enabled them to follow the course and interact with their teachers through assignments and quizzes, on a computer at home and work units or a training center for the handicapped in their communities.<br><br> According to an estimate by C.D.P.F., China has about 50 million (five crores) handicapped people. Of which 8.77 million (87.7 lakhs) are visually impaired.<br><br> The country has recently put in a lot of effort to provide visually impaired people with easier access to more information and schooling. Some of the efforts include:<br><br>-- The Shenzhen business daily published the country’s first newspaper supplement in Braille in 2002.<br>-- Chinese Braille based computer system developed in 2003, to cater to the increasing communication demands of visually impaired people.<br>-- Education authorities prepared exam papers in Braille so that blind students could also sit for the national college entrance exam.
