Blind skier reaches a new height

Mon, 07/23/2012 - 13:08 -- admin

A former soldier in U.K. nicknamed ‘The Cannonball’ has set his second blind speed ski record.

Kevin Alderton, hurtled down an indoor slope in Landgraaf in the Netherlands, at 56.36 miles per hour. Alderton (35) skis with the aid of a guide who sends him commands via a radio link.

"I'm over the moon. I can't believe how much my life has changed since taking up skiing. I'll obviously be back next year to break this record,” he said. Alderton was left with only 4% of his vision after his eyes were gouged when he tried to stop a gang attacking a woman in 1998. About 30 men punched and kicked him to the ground during the incident in Islington, north London. He now wants to beat both his indoor and outdoor records. He is hoping to be selected for the British team in the 2008 World Championships and the 2010 Paralympics in Canada.

About his latest adventure he said, “Indoor skiing was a bit like doing 50 to 60 miles per hour inside a fridge.” He set the outdoor speed skiing world record for a blind person last April.
