Kolkata: Alipore zoological garden, the country’s oldest zoo, is going to install boards carrying names and descriptions of animals in Braille to help visually challenged visitors.
Zoo director Subhankar Sengupta announced the decision after he met a group of visually challenged students who came to visit the zoo for the first time on Wednesday. “We have planned Braille boardswith names and details of animals at every cage
The bird and reptile cages will soon have the boards. The zoo is already equipped with wheelchairs, specially designed ramps and toilet facilities for disabled visitors.
Chandrima Ghose (13), a student of Louis Braille Memorial School in Serampore came to visit the zoo with her friends. She said, “If the boards were in Braille we would have easily read the names. It is always a great pleasure for us to read it on our own rather than being prompted by others
The zoo director said, user-friendly pavements and new ramps where needed were being constructed. “For the Braille boards we are consulting experts working for visually challenged persons,” he added.
