BRAILLE BOOK ON MENSTRUAL HYGIENE RELEASED

Fri, 03/09/2018 - 10:40 -- geeta.nair

Menstrual hygiene education is a basic right of every girl by virtue of her birth and, hence, all girls, irrespective of class, caste, economic condition and physical ability, should be taught on the issue.

Having this aim, a Braille book on menstrual hygiene was released here by Dr Birupakshya Dixit, India head of the Practical Action. He said this book would be distributed among 2,500 young girls in the State. He also suggested to the Government to replicate the initiative.

Earlier, the project had produced an audio book for visually-challenged young girls and video books in Sign Language for hearing and speech impaired young girls. More than 6,000 young girls were reached through this initiative by the Practical Action, a UK-based NGO.

“Sunolo Sakhi”, a knowledge delivery project designed specifically to bridge the knowledge gap of menstruation and adolescent hygiene practices, is serving more than 10,000 young girls in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

The Practical Action has partnered with local CCWD and started this unique campaign ‘Sunolosakhi’, targeting the young girls and women.

The two organisations have adopted 60 slums in Bhubaneswar and 21 slums in Cuttack in different phases. The young girls from the Sakhi Clubs are working as peers for others inside their slum and schools. This project is using radio as a medium to reach out to these young girls and addressing their queries live on air.

Among others, Jyotshna Rani Mishra, Prangya Parimita Behera, Sasasiv Swain and Abhaya Mohanta were present.
