Bus hailing kits for visually impaired commuters

Thu, 07/19/2012 - 11:24 -- admin

The ACT Government is running a three month trial where participants receive a pocket-sized bus hailing kit containing Braille number cards and a plastic sleeve.

It can be used to make a sign showing the number of the bus route the commuter would like to catch, and then held up to signal the driver.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher says the system has been used in Canada.

"These have been used overseas to help people with a visual impairment catch a bus, and make sure that they are hailing the actual bus that they want to catch," she said.

"So this has been in response to a request from an ACTION bus user who suggested this system to ACTION, and ACTION went and investigated it. It looks like a good idea."

Meanwhile new figures suggest Canberra's bus services are becoming more reliable.

During February this year, more than 68,000 scheduled services ran successfully and 314 were cancelled.

It is a big change from the same period last year, when more than 1,000 bus services were cancelled.

Ms Gallagher says ACTION has recruited dozens of new drivers which has improve the service

"One of the most frequent complaints you get about a public transport service is its reliability, so that's something that we have been relying on," she said.

"99.5 per cent of the buses that are scheduled to run actually running, is a really good result.

"I think it's very much down to the new drivers that have been employed for ACTION."
