We discovered that most of them could not speak English and surprisingly their Hindi language skills too were below par. When it came to social skills, General Knowledge and computer skills, they scored very poorly. They had no self belief and aspirations and expectations from life were next to nothing. We realised that what the education system failed to deliver in 12 to 17 years could not be made up in a 4 to 6 month skill development (instant) programme.

We believe that the interventions have to be made when the blind child is between 8 and 12. Children have to realise early in life that though their blindness poses certain challenges, they have potential. They need to have aspirations and dreams. They need to recognise the value of language skills, technology tools and knowledge in the pursuit of their dreams. We need to challenge them early and provide them with tools to imbibe the much needed skills they need to realise their dreams.

We, as an organisation want to work on modules that would help young blind children gain greater value in terms of imbibing employability skills from their formative years. We want to make sure that future generations do not need to go through meaningless skill development instant formulae. We propose to work on a pilot in the first phase. Once the module is ready, we will deliver it Nation wide our Eyeway network.

We need funding upto Rs.25 lakhs for this endeavour of ours. The designing and building of this module will require brain storming sessions from educationists, professional trainers, development of content in Etext, Braille, audio material and films. This will also involve travel and interactions with people in different parts of the country.
