Differently abled to get therapy in special centre

Parents and caregivers of disabled kids in Gujarat take note! A new centre called Urmi Divyang School Research & Therapy centre, which will look into research as well as therapy needs of disabled students has been opened in Sama in Vadodara.

The centre promises to reach out to children with physical and mental disabilities irrespective of their economic backgrounds. It will provide, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, sensory integrated therapy and speech therapy.

NID Ahmedabad reports rise in applications from people with disabilities

India's premier design institute, the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad has reported a rise in the number of applications under Persons with Disability (PWD) category. This year, NID received a total of 114 applications as against 78 last year. While the institute has roped in BM Institute of Mental Health to scrutinize the applications, they are also in talks to identify discipline-wise disability, to encourage such students.

When Manjushree, Nagesh and Sudha’s 8-year-old daughter, asked them for a bicycle, the couple was in a fix. Visually impaired and hailing from a poor background, the thought of telling their daughter that they would not be able to fulfil her wish was painful.

However, thanks to some Bengalureans who swung into action, Manjushree’s parents were able to make her little dream come true. On Wednesday morning, much to the little girl’s delight, she was presented with a bicycle – which she is persistently learning to master, her parents say.

Hyderabad: Tens and thousands of school children identified with various kinds of disabilities are left in the lurch in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh following non-appointment of special educators for the last four years. 

According to sources, there are 11,000 secondary schools for which both the States have been receiving funds under the Right to Education Act (RTE) from the Centre.

A selfless couple have adopted six blind children from around the world - including a baby girl who was dumped in a trash can.

Joe and Karen Bartling, both 60, of Oakton, Virginia, dreamed of having a large family but struggled to conceive naturally after having their biological son Joel, 30.

Following failed IVF they turned to adoption and heard about a baby that had been abandoned in South Korean orphanage through a customer at Karen's doll store.

In a first for India, Mizoram chief minister Lal Thanhawla last week inaugurated the Centre for Disability Studies at the Mizoram University in Aizawl. The Centre has been set up by the Department of Person with Disabilities, under the aegis of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.

BENGALURU:The Department for Empowerment of Differently-abled and Senior Citizens has decided to write to the Railway Board objecting to the disabled coach being placed at the end of the trains. This comes close on the heels of two knife-yielding men robbing a differently-abled woman passenger in the differently-abled coach on Bengaluru-Mangaluru-Kannur train on June 28.

To give loans to disabled, corporation wants government guarantee

BENGALURU:Differently-abled people in the state have been unable to get loans from National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NHFDC) for a little more than a year now.

The corporation was hit when 664 people had taken loans in the past but did not pay back. As a result, the corporation stopped giving out loans and insisted that the state government give a bank guarantee for those taking loans, something that the government is unwilling to do without a proper screening mechanism in place.

Election Commission to consider vote-from-home facility for people with disabilities

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is clearly committed to the idea of making elections accessible for people with disabilities across India. Apart from voter ID cards in Braille, mobile app to educate and motivate disabled voters, and sign language windows in polling booths, it is looking at several other measures to ensure disabled people are not left out of the voting process.
