A fashion show with a vision

"I am sure this show would be an eye opener for the fashion industry as such shows are not only about the skin but mean more than that," said young fashion designer Himangshu Bora.

Certainly it was. Eight young models displayed some of Bora's summer collections created with an ethnic touch along with super models Dipanita Sharma and Nina Manuel. These models were students of the Guwahati Blind School (Assam). The occasion: A show ‘Light Up the World’ at the Pragjyoti cultural centre in Guwahati held on the 17 July 2006.

"For me, the visually impaired students are more than supermodels. They have instincts far more sharp and sensitive though they cannot see the light of the world," said Bora.

The idea behind hosting the show was conceived a few days ago with Bora planning something different. "I want people to change their outlook and perception towards the physically disabled people and hence this show,” explained the designer.

The training schedule was strenuous, but the aspiring models took it all. "Some of them, if groomed properly, could give top models a run for their money," a teacher of the school said.

Around 20 other models from Assam and outside the state also walked the ramp in the novel show. The proceeds of the show went for the welfare of the school.
