First hand computer training for visually challenged

Trichy: Jegajothi Readers Club, in association with Humanitty club of National Institute of Technology-Trichy (NIT), launched a five-day training programme on computer expertise for the visually challenged here on Tuesday
Aimed at bridging the gap between the visually impaired by means of computer, the five day programme is expected to impart technical hnads-on knowledge to the camp attendees. On the first day, sixty students were given orientation classes on softwares, in a bid to enable them to use computers for acquiring knowledge.

J Abdul Jaffer, coordinator of Jegajothi Voluntary Readers Council for Visually Impaired, said that while employability of normal person was uncertain today, it became all the more difficulty for the visually challenged to earn a living. "It is in this context that the club has organized the programme which would help them gain jobs in future," he said.

"Through the non-visual desktop access (NVDA), an open source software, the club will teach the participants how to download e-books from internet to enrich their knowledge," he said.

About four freelance resource persons from Chennai and other parts have been roped in to give a hands-on guidance to the visually impaired. The participating are from in and around Trichy and adjoining districts including Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur.

At the end of the training session on December 30, about 20 students are likely to receive Flextalk players from the central government.
