Hearing is seeing for Ben Underwood

Thu, 07/26/2012 - 10:00 -- admin

Playing video games with his brother Isaiah, in the cacophony of noise, 14 year old Ben Underwood can figure out everything that's happening just by listening.

"How can you even separate the sound? "Because they got different voices,” says Ben. Watching him in action, it seems clear that Ben really can do anything!

Ben was just two-years-old when cancer claimed his eyes, both were surgically removed. He woke up from that surgery and Ben said, “I can't see any more, I can't see any more.” His mother encouraged young Ben saying, “You can't use your eyes but you've got your nose, and your ears and your mouth.”

Since then, Ben has used his hearing, his touch, his sense of smell to conquer the world of darkness. He learnt at a young age how to make clicking sounds and hear where things are around him. His highly developed echolocation ability allows him to play basketball, ride horses, roller blade etc. His ability is developed to the point that he can differentiate between a truck and a car in a parking lot.

Recently, he visited the dolphins at ‘SeaWorld’ in San Diego (U.S.) and discovered that he and the animals share the same talent for listening.

Ben gets his extraordinary self confidence from his mother."There’s nothing I can't do, there's that you can't do I can't do better. And that's the attitude, you know what I’m saying? That's what I want to give him,” said Aquanetta.

The real story here is not about his talents, but an attitude that makes life different.
