Jammu: December 3: In commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disability, an event was held at the Residential School for the Visually Impaired (Boys) in Roopnagar.
The Social Welfare Department orchestrated the function under the overarching theme for this year’s observance: “United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities (Divyangjan)
Distinguished guests, Vivek Sharma, Director General Social Welfare, Jammu and Harvinder Kour, MD Mission Vatsalya (J&K), graced the occasion as Chief Guests. Mamta Rajput, District Social Welfare Officer, Jammu, was the Guest of Honour.
The event showcased a vibrant array of cultural performances by the visually impaired students of the Residential School. Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, those who clinched medals in the National Judo Championship at Amritsar were felicitated by the Chief Guests.
Addressing the gathering, Vivek Sharma commended the exceptional achievements of the Residential School for the Visually Impaired children. She applauded their success in securing gold and silver trophies in the national judo championship and recognized their noteworthy accomplishments in diverse activities, including singing and academics.
She reiterated the department’s commitment to empowering persons with disabilities and shed light on various initiatives aimed at enhancing their lives.
Emphasising the core values of dignity and respect, Vivek Sharma highlighted the department’s unwavering dedication to providing better schemes and platforms for specially-abled individuals. Notable initiatives mentioned included the opening of VYOM (Vibrant Young Open Minds) for intellectually challenged children and the establishment of CRC (Composite Regional Centre) in Jammu district.
The celebration concluded on a note of inspiration, showcasing the resilience and achievements of persons with disabilities, reinforcing the collective commitment to inclusivity and empowerment.
