Intl Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons With Disabilities CRPD

As you are aware, UN CRPD was passed in December 2006 and India has been an active participant in the deliberations. It is also one of the most important events in the history of the disability rights movement. The task before us is now to understand the CPRD, interpret it, disseminate it and build action plans around it. In order to start the process AARTH ASTHA is organizing a two day workshop on the 21st and 22nd of May 2007 in Delhi.

The aims of this workshop will be to
a. Inform on the relationship between national and international law.
b. Inform on the Salient features of the CRPD.
c. Assist participants and persons with disabilities to study and use the Convention from varied perspectives.
d. Discuss how domestic law and our own attitudes and programmes would need to alter in the light of the CRPD.

In order to understand the Convention from different perspectives, we hope to have participation from disability-based organisations, disabled people, parent associations, organisations working on child rights, gender, health, education and others.

A special focus of this workshop will be on understanding the rights of children with disabilities in CRPD in relation to the rights of children in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

This workshop is being organised by AARTH Action, Advocacy, Research and Training in Disability a new initiative of ASTHA.
