In what could be called a major breakthrough, scientists have developed a new jab which they claim could cure blindness. An international team, led by Britain's Yorkshire Eye Hospital, has created the steroid implant which releases an anti-inflammatory drug near the retina to help stop the onset of blindness and also restore loss of vision.

Special ATMs for blind nowhere to be seen

Using ATMs in the city is a task for the visually impaired, as most banks do not have Braille and talking machines, despite instructions from the RBI to make changes. It has been two years since Veena Kumari (35), has been requesting a bank for a debit card. The bank refuses to give her one claiming that she would not be able to recognise the PIN number on the card, and would require assistance to conduct transactions.

Bangalore University comes up with action plan for blind students

Visually challenged students of Bangalore University have something to smile about. The varsity is now taking initiatives to make their learning process more easier. A meeting was held at the vice-chancellor’s office on Thursday that chalked out an action plan for visually challenged students.

Vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev announced several measures that the university would take to add value to these students.

The university has formed a committee under the chairmanship of the vice-chancellor to carry out the action plan.

The largest-ever law school exam that decides admission to nearly a dozen national schools across India will turn disabled-friendly this summer.

Additional time to crack the two-hour exam, option of bringing one's own scribes along with instruments for problem-solving and a question paper sans any visual reasoning to aid the blind are some of the key features of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) policy of candidates with disabilities to be implemented from this year.

The three blind mice are no longer blind. Well, the ones in the nursery rhyme may still be blind, but the other week researchers at the University of Southern California and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology used a scientific technique called optogenetics to restore the ability of blind mice to differentiate between light and dark. The mice had retinitis pigmentosa, a disease in which light-sensitive cells in the retina are destroyed, causing the brain to no longer receive visual image information.
