After series of fruitful discussions with the members of the National Federation of the Blind (N.F.B.), the Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh has assured to bring about reforms, to improve the condition of visually impaired persons in the country.

The major breakthrough being the participation of the Government to bring about change. The Prime Minister has agreed to three main demands of N.F.B. that will bring about an improvement in job opportunities for visually impaired persons.

One of issues presses was that even though the People With Disability act of 1995 guaranteed one per cent reservations for blind people in Government jobs, very few were actually filled up. Accepting the lapse in the government functioning, Prime Minister promised to start an employment drive to clear the back log.

Amendment of the People With Disabilities act was another issue that NFB had raised. In 1999 a government panel had sent recommendations for amendment but according to S.K Rungta, General Secretary, N.F.B.: no action has been taken yet.

However, the PM assured the N.F.B. that the report will be considered and taken up in the budget session of the parliament.
