New Year gift to blind book lovers

Thu, 07/26/2012 - 10:25 -- admin

This month, at the ‘Kolkata Book Fair’, ‘Voice of World’ will be ready to offer a new gift to the blind book lovers. The N.G.O. is going to release a Braille edition of Rabindranath Tagore’s short stories called ‘Galpo Guchha’ during the event.

“We have decided to script a book on Braille featuring the short stories of Rabindranath Tagore. The reason for this is that Tagore’s stories have a unique flavour and are very popular both in academic and literary circles. We have decided to transcribe a full-fledged Braille book on all the short stories written by Rabindranath Tagore,” said Geeta Gupta, secretary of Voice of World.

But the endeavour is an expensive one. Doing a page in Braille costs Rupees 100. “So you can imagine what the total cost will be like to transcribe all of the short stories. We are collecting the money by way of donations from various benefactors,” said Gupta.

Every year the N.G.O. releases one new book in Braille in the Book Fair. ‘Voice of World’ had earlier transcribed Gitabitan in Braille, a collection of songs written by Tagore.

The N.G.O. is also bringing out a fortnightly broad sheet called ‘The Voice of the World’, which has found quite a few takers. “We have blind reporters going out to do stories and cover events,” said Gupta about the initiative.
