TRAI begins discussions on making ICT accessible for disabled

Telecom regulator TRAI began a dialogue on making ICT accessible for the disabled,
saying more policy interventions are needed in this area where benefits of technology have not been fully realised.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), releasing its latest consultation paper on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), has also sought industry views on whether handset makers should be mandated to manufacture at least one model for the disabled with assistant technology features such as hearing, visual aids and emergency buttons.

The intention is to take feedback from Persons with Speech/Hearing Disability and Persons with Visual Disabilities on their shopping habits and providing them an enhanced customer experience. We are not inviting Persons with physical disabilities because infrastructure changes are currently underway and once it's fully ready, we too will start inviting them.

NDMA seeks Kerala's help to make disabled people disaster-ready

KOLLAM: It was a special occasion for Kerala when it became the first state to launch a disaster preparedness training programme for persons with disabilities. That was in May 2016. A year after, the state is again in the limelight.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), which is in the process of chalking out guidelines for training the differently abled on survival skills in times of natural disasters and other emergency situations, has decided to seek the help of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) in preparing it.

Microsoft India today hosted its first-ever Accessibility Summit here aiming to enhance technology access for people with disabilities.

The summit aimed at demonstrating the business value of accessible technology for organisations, the need for a collaborative effort as well as assessing policy's role in creating an accessible India, a company statement said.
