Twenty-seven-year-old K. Shibli, who is visually impaired since birth, is now an inspiration to several students at Kannur University.
On World Sight Day on Thursday, Shibli, who is the first visually challenged student to enrol as a PhD scholar in business management at the university, stood as a role model for many differently abled.
A kindle for visually impaired students is expected to hit the markets in six months — one that wouldn’t cost a bomb. When it was time for Sunil and Shubha Jangam to enrol their daughter Urvi, who was born without sight, into school, they took her to a school for the blind. At the time, they’d thought Urvi’s blindness would be a disability, but as it turned out, there would be no holding Urvi back. After a stellar academic career, last week, Urvi, 31, became the first blind female student in India to be awarded a PhD in German studies.

A bench of justices S Muralidhar and Talwant Singh has directed the Centre to give details regarding the backlog vacancies for persons with disabilities, particularly visually impaired, from 1996 onwards.
There has been an increase of almost 10 per cent in the number of registrations under the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category at the Delhi University, officials said Sunday.
A total of 1,665 people have registered under this category on the varsity’s admission portal this year, including an acid attack victim and leprosy-cured persons.
Twenty-one conditions are included under the PwD category.

KATHMANDU (The Kathmandu Post/ANN) – The floor of the National Braille Library for the Blind is filled with books. Big, thick volumes of books in Braille are littered all over while steel racks are carelessly stacked with more.
“These all are donated books. Different international organisations donate books to us almost every alternate month,” said librarian Ambika Shrestha.
Walking around the theme pavilion at the New Delhi World Book Fair, one can spot a range of aides for the visually impaired — Braille geometry sets, chess boards, a set of playing cards, but oddly enough, not many books.
The visible shortage of literature for people with disability at the fair themed, “Books for Readers with
Special Needs”, can be attributed to the dearth of publishers working in the sector, said one of the officials from National Book Trust (NBT).
