Pune University’s special students get aid.MP3

Blind students studying at the University of Pune and its affiliated colleges in the district have reason to cheer.
 
In order to increase their pace of learning and enhance their academic potential, the Pune University Blind Student Learning Centre which functions under the Department of Education and Extensive Education, has decided to distribute special MP3 players to its students.
 
Some of the devices have already been handed out and the results have been encouraging.

Rajya Sabha passes bill to provide education to disabled children

A bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha today to widen the beneficiary net for disabled children in Right to Education and provide those with severe disability the option of receiving education at home.

 

Moving the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2010, for consideration, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said it provides the right to receive home-based education to children with severe disabilities and dismissed criticism of the provision.

 

RTE clause for disabled kids may widen inequality

This amendment adds children with disability to the definition of “disadvantaged groups” and will now be a part of the 25 per cent reservation for the Economically Weaker Section category, under the Right to Education Act.

The bill has given special benefit to children suffering from autism, mental retardation, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities of choosing to study from home.

Ahmedabad University gives career option to visually impaired

The Ahmedabad University (AU) has granted affiliation to a college of physiotherapy for visually impaired in Ahmedabad.

According to authorities at Ahmedabad University (AU), the three and a half year diploma course on physiotherapy at the newly-affiliated college will be taken over by the varsity from the new academic year.� BM Shah, registrar of the varsity, said that a batch of 15 students will be taken in the college as the term begins from this June.

Visually impaired students seek better State support

Students and staff of Tikshna, an organisation for rehabilitation of the visually impaired, staged a dharna outside the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Wednesday in support of their demands, including release of grants from the State government.

They took out a procession and raised slogans against the alleged negligent attitude of the authorities in providing facilities to the organisation.

Home-based schooling for disabled is non-inclusive

Even as there is much anticipation of the listing of amendments to of the RTE Act in the Lok Sabha on Friday, disability rights activists have expressed their discontent over the amended RTE Act that allows home-based schooling for severely disabled children. The Rajya Sabha passed an amendment in the RTE Act recently widening the beneficiary net for children with disability and providing those with severe disability such autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and multiple disabilities the benefit of choosing to study from home.

Partially-sighted man in jobs appeal

A PARTIALLY-sighted York man has finally got a job after being out-of-work for 12 months – now he is pleading for other people with sight problems to be given the same chance.

 

Steve Butler, 34, of Tang Hall, had been finding that sight loss was a major barrier to employment, despite having a number of administration qualifications and working in voluntary positions.

 

He said he was losing his confidence, fearing every time an employer realised he was visually impaired, they would find a reason not to interview him.

 

Parliament passes RTE Bill

Parliament passed the Right of Children to Free and compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2012, with the Lok Sabha passing the measure on Wednesday, thereby providing for an integrated education process which would allow differently-abled children in the age group 6-14 the right of admission to any school.

Discussions with state govt to fill vacancies for specially-abled

He was speaking at the sixth anniversary of NFB held at the School for Blind here on Wednesday.

Rungta said one round of discussion has already been held with the chief secretary and he has agreed to consider the issue.

Also, he has assured that a meeting of all departments would be convened to sort out the issue.

He has said that another round of meeting would be held within eight to 10 days with representatives of NFB and discuss the stand of the state government. Rungta said the issue would be sorted out within the next month.
