Visually impaired man killed in Bhagwatipara

A 40-year-old person suffering from night blindness was murdered in the city on Tuesday night when he tried to intervene in a scuffle near his house.
According to police, the deceased has been identified as Bharat Vishodiya, a resident of Bhagwatipara area. At around 10 pm on Tuesday, Vishodiya came out of his home after hearing about a fight. He thought his younger brother Dinesh was involved in the ruckus and went to inquire about it.

Free walking tour of Little India

CITY Hall's free  guided tour of Brickfields on foot every Saturday  has helped tourists and  locals to discover the many charms of Little India, especially with the latter's historical landmarks built between the 1920s and '80s.
The guided walks, organised since Feb  18,  is about two and a half hours, and begins at 8.30am.

Vivekananda Ashram is the  starting point.

 After registration, tour guide Woo Yin Khee,  better known as Billy,  will brief groups about the tour before heading to Jalan Rozario at 9pm.

Man helps visually-challenged people ‘see’ things as never before

Galvanised by his desire to improve the lives of the visually-impaired, Shahzad Zaidi has been burning the midnight oil for the past five years in order to develop “tactile graphics”, which, according to him, help them ‘see’ through their hands.

He has created over 100 low-cost learning aids and games for the visually-challenged. These include Urdu and English alphabet books with pictures, a science book which depicts a solar system and cross-section of a cell, colouring books, maps and games such as tic-tac-toe.

Schools to become more differently abled- friendly

Child-friendly toilets for differently abled, ramps and hand-rails in school buildings and strengthening resource centres for CWSN were given importance in Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)’s activities under Inclusive Education for Differently Abled (IED) this year. An SSA report states that Coimbatore Education District excelled in providing facilities for differently abled children by conducting 148 surgeries and distributing assistive devices to 968 children, the highest across the State.
