MINATI BEHERA NEW PWDS CHIEF

The State Government on Monday appointed social activist Dr Minati Behera as the new State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approved Behera’s name from among three names recommended by the Search Committee formed by the Government for the post.  The post had been lying vacant for some days after the retirement of Kasturi Mohapatra.

Tom Yeh says he had the idea when he was reading "Goodnight Moon" to his then-3-year-old son.

Provide writers for disabled students: Delhi HC to ICAI

New Delhi, Nov 18 (IANS): The Delhi High Court Monday directed the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) to prepare a panel of writers to assist disabled students in appearing for the chartered accountancy examinations that it conducts.

The court has asked that the panel be constituted within six months.

The latest Supreme Court ruling on the rights of persons with disabilities has struck down an arbitrary proviso in current government policy that had become an impediment in the mandatory reservation of three per cent of jobs for this important section of the population. In disposing of an appeal from the Union of India, the court has pronounced that the quota should be computed uniformly across all grades of employment, thereby removing a discrepancy in the 2005 government order.

It was his moment of glory when the Supreme Court, in a landmark judgment on October 8, 2013, ordered three per cent reservation to all differently-abled persons in central and state government jobs.

For 59-year-old S.K. Rungta, it was the culmination of a 15-year-old legal battle. Almost 37 years after the Ministry of Social Justice promised it and 18 years after the Disablity Act made the quota mandatory, it had remained merely on paper forcing him to move the court.

State administration cannot dispense with ore reduce rank of a government servant if he or she acquires disability including mental illness or retardation during service, the Supreme Court has ruled.

Quoting the provisions of The Persons with disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995 a bench of Justice GS Singhvi and Justice SJ Mukopadhyaya held that if a person is found unsuitable for the post he or she holds on account of acquired disability during service, he or she should be moved to another post suitable to his or her state.
