Retinal diseases are one of the biggest causes of chronic blindness

NEW DELHI: The blind population in India is estimated to rise to 15 million by 2020. Retinal diseases account for a significant share of the vision loss burden, compared to other eye-related diseases that can cause blindness. 

Of the various retinal disorders, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are two progressive diseases that cause loss of vision. AMD and DME can be effectively managed if patients are diagnosed in a timely manner. 

MoPH workshop to promote eye health of schoolchildren

THE Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), in collaboration with the Primary Health Care Corporation and Ministry of Education and Higher Education, organised a workshop recently to promote eye health of students.
The two-day workshop focused on 125 nurses and health professionals working in independent, private and community schools in the State of Qatar.

An awareness campaign about Amblyopia (lazy eyes) and squint (crossed eyes) was taken up by L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) on the occasion of Children’s Day and as part of Children’s Eye Care Week on Tuesday.

Amblyopia is a vision development disorder among children in which an eye fails to achieve normal vision even with full prescription glasses or contact lens. In most cases, only one eye is affected but if left untreated, it can cause severe visual disability in the affected eye.

Experts say that celebrating Diwali with care can prevent accidents such as visual impairment, hearing loss, breathing problems among others.

“The spark from fireworks can damage eyelids and eyebrows. The eye may also lose its moisture due to the smoke emitted by crackers,” said Dr Shashidhar, ophthalmologist, Minto Eye Hospital.

He added that an eye specialist should be consulted whenever there is an injury instead of attempting self-medication.

“Children under the age of 15 years should not be allowed to play with crackers that may cause injuries,” he added.

Supreme Court nod for MBBS seats to colour-blind

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has opened the doors for colour-blind students to pursue MBBS course by ordering the admission of two such candidates, who have scored high marks in the entrance examination, for the next academic year.
Terming its action as “transcendental importance of justice”, the apex court said that peculiar facts and circumstances of the case required it to invoke special powers under Article 142 of the Constitution.
