The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995, (PWDA) completed two decades of existence this month. However, the majority of disabled people is yet to avail the entitlements envisaged under the law. Inaccessible public places, non-accommodative educational institutions and the lack of employment opportunities for the disabled are widespread.

Jharkhand’s small village of Nagar Utari in Garhwa district eked out a place for itself amongst hundreds of participants for the first time as Prithviraj Singh, a Class XII student won the third prize in the 16-17 age group category of the Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) awards at the National Science Exhibition in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), New Delhi yesterday.

Haryana ‘disables’ its disability commissioner

For the last one year, Haryana’s Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities has been meeting visitors in the parking lot of his office in Chandigarh’s Sector 17. For, his office is on the third floor and has no lift or ramp leading up to it, making it inaccessible to many wheelchair-bound visitors who come to him with grievances.

Job Row: Blind Lawyer Seeks Contempt Order against Varsity

KOCHI: Prasanna Kumari, a 47-year-old visually impaired lawyer, has filed a petition before the Kerala High Court seeking to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Vice-chancellor and Registrar of the Kannur University for not complying with a court order.   The court had directed the Kannur University to treat Prasanna Kumari as one who is eligible for the post of lecturer in Law. The court had also invalidated an appointment made by her to the post.
