Audio library promised for the visually challenged

In an endeavour to build awareness that the visually challenged are very much part of the mainstream society, around 50 persons, including students of the Government School for the Blind here, staged a nearly one-km rally on Tuesday.

The rally was taken out to the Government College here as part of the World White Cane Safety day that fell on October 15.

Steps to be taken

The programme was organised by the district unit of the Kerala Federation of the Blind in association with the with the National Service Scheme (NSS) at the Government College.

DAPD continues visual impairment advocacy

The Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD Inc.) is continuing its advocacy on visual impairment with a week of activities.

Visual Awareness Week and the 11th National Dollar Day was launched at the DAPD’s office in Goodwill on Monday 10 October 2016.

Visual Awareness Week is dedicated to informing and sensitizing the public about the challenges that the visually impaired face and how they can assist them in making their day to day life easier.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday asked Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to file reply within four weeks in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) highlighting the difficulty faced by blind persons in identifying currency notes and coins.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Manjula Chellur, while hearing a petition filed by National Association for the Blind (NAB), asked the central bank to submit its response within a month and allowed the petitioner to file a rejoinder within two weeks of RBI filing its reply.

Students devise a device for the blind

Students of the YMCA University of Science and Technology have developed an electronic device that will help visually impaired persons track the way without anyone’s help.

The students behind the innovation — Karan Handa, Mayank Vashisht, Kushank Arora, Moksh Girdhar and Kushal Sharma — are from the electronics engineering department.

They won the second prize for their innovation at a recently concluded technical fest at the Indraprastha Institute of Science and Technology, New Delhi.

Braving incessant rains, hundreds of visually-impaired people on Thursday hit the streets here decrying the State Government’s apathy in fulfiling their 15-point charter of demands.
