No takers for Nuance Talks software

Wed, 07/25/2012 - 16:15 -- admin

Nuance Talks is a software that enables the visually impaired people to use his or her G.S.M. mobile phone easily. Surprisingly, it has not found many takers in the State of Gujarat. Government figures suggest, there are only 20 users of the software across the whole State. ‘Nuance TALKS’ (U.S.A.), when used on a G.S.M. mobile phone, provides speech-enabled text messages, and makes files and other screen content accessible to a visually impaired user. According to the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Gandhinagar, people cannot afford to buy the software as it is very expensive. ‘‘Besides, hardly two per cent of the visually impaired population in the State knows English, a necessity to handle the software." Mehta feels it needs further research for the software to make it more user-friendly among visually impaired people. ‘‘This can be done by introducing new kinds of technology. For example, The Braille script can be embossed on the keypad of the mobile phone so that the users become comfortable with it. He further suggests that the software should be operational in regional language so that people who do not know English get comfortable with it.’’ Bitendra Manoja, Director I.T. and Services, National Association for the Blind, agrees with Mehta. ‘‘The software is priced at Rupees 3,800 and it works only on certain models starting at Rupees 8,000. So affordability hinders its sale. Besides, it does not work on a C.D.M.A. phone,’’ said Manoja. However, Saksham Trust, New Delhi, which started the distribution of the software in the country in October last year, feels otherwise. The market price of the software stands at Rupees 12,000 and while here the price is much less, it explained.
