Karan Singhania scored 92.4% in Class 12 examinations conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (C.B.S.E.) for the academic year 2009-10. Karan is a commerce student and bagged the first position in his school.
In an email interview with Swasti Saraogi, he talks about the efforts he put in to achieve this feat, and the support he got from his family, friends, and teachers.
The moment I came to know that I have 90%+ marks, my home was filled with joy and eyes were filled with tears, this is because god has given us very less moments of happiness. Today my father says with pride that he is Karan’s father.
My subjects were Accountancy, Business, Economics, English and Physical education.
When I was in class 6th, it was diagnosed that I am a retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patient; before that I was fine.
When I started class 11th, I could only distinguish between darkness and light, and the condition is same now.
I did my schooling from D.A.V. Public School, Gevra Project, Korba, Chhattisgarh
When I cleared class 10th, many people advised me to take arts or any theoretical subject, but I have always liked practical subjects or which require logic, not mugging up power.
I wanted to take up science. However I was discouraged because it is a practical subject.Humanities was not offered in my school so I had no option. My principal was not too keen initially but because of the efforts of my parents and other teachers, he obliged.
My friends and my teachers have always been my strength. The teachers guided me and friends assisted me while practising. After getting admission, within a few days, the teachers noticed my sincerity and the principal began to support me too.
I am not familiar with Braille, so I used recorded study material and e-textbooks and sample papers.
I was provided with a scribe by the board, a separate room was arranged for me in the centre and I got 1 hour extra.
Parents have always stood by me in every difficulty. It is my parents’ hard work and moral support that helped me do so well.
I would like to do my graduation from Shri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi.
I do not want to stay away from my home. My parents are also worried as to how I would manage without them because it is totally a new experience for me.
I will start my preparations from Delhi itself.
I like dancing, gossiping with friends and seeing films.
