Partially blind banker excels in squash

He proved just how good he is by winning the 40-44 year age group title at the Squash National Championships at the Delhi Gymkhana Club, recently. ”Squash is my passion,” said Sanjeev Anand after the victory.

Anand is partially sighted. He is a champion in a game that requires immense hand-eye coordination. After losing the first two sets in the final match, Anand kept his hopes alive by wining the third set. He then rallied on to win the fifth and the final set to claim his maiden national title.

Anand showed he had little problem in sighting as the ball came rushing towards him at 80-90 kilometres per hour. But his perseverance and determination made him win the match. In his words, “I do have problems (in sighting the ball) but I am now used to this.”

He took to the sport after losing an eye during a boxing bout at Ajmer’s Mayo College when he was 14 years old, and has not looked back since.

This senior vice-president of ABN Amro bank still manages to give his opponents a tough time on the courts.
