Kolkata: The department of mass education extension and  library services wants to set up a higher studies institute,  complete with residential facilities, for persons with  disabilities, at the Baruipur educational  hub.
State mass education extension and library services   minister Siddiqullah Choudhury said at the  state assembly on Thursday that a proposal would be sent to   the chief minister soon. “Bengal has 74 schools for persons  with disabilities and 15,000 students study there. Education is free till the children turn 18. We want to develop an  educational institute with residential facilities where they  can stay and study till Plus-II and beyond, for college  degrees,” Choudhury said.

The minister said he had seen the site where the institute was being planned. “Our officials have also seen the proposed site. We will place a proposal on this to the chief minister. At the beginning, we will propose to start off with 200 boys and 200 girls on the campus,” Choudhury said,  adding that the institute would be developed as grants came in.

During the discussion, the minister also appreciated  the role of the principal of Calcutta Blind School  saying the school for the visually impaired was doing well.
