Risca man completes 24-mile wheelchair trek to Senedd

Thu, 07/19/2012 - 11:16 -- admin

A RISCA man took on a 24-mile wheelchair challenge to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.

Martin King, 42, travelled from the Twyn Carn Day Centre in Risca to the Senedd, to raise awareness of the condition.

Mr King is visually impaired and has been using a wheelchair for the past 14 years due to muscular dystrophy.

The father-of-four had trained hard for the challenge over the past five months in his local parks.

He set off from the day centre on Saturday morning and travelled along the A467 following the A48 route through Old St Mellons to Cardiff and along Newport Road before finishing at Cardiff Bay.

The route took five-and-a-half hours to complete and Mr King was supported by friends and family who walked the route with him or who were on hand in the support car cheering him on.

Mr King said it was tough and he felt a little achy on Sunday.

But he added: "I feel very proud that I've created some awareness. It was just amazing and I'm a bit overwhelmed."

Mr King has so far raised more than £1,500 for the charity.
