She lights up blind parents' dreams

AHMEDABAD: Birwa Hadial was ecstatic when she passed the CA final exams on Tuesday. Her parents Damji and Krishna, however, were over the moon. The blind couple cannot see, but they had always seen to it that they raised their daughter well and helped her attain heights through education.

Damji is an SSC pass while Krishna is a class 5 pass. Both suffer from medical conditions rendering them blind since childhood. Damji ran away from his home in Jamnagar to escape an oppressive family that saw a blind child as a burden. Krisha never got the support needed to study and stand on her feet.

When they got married, they decided they would have only one child - be it a boy or girl - and give the child the best life and education. Their mission was fulfilled on Tuesday when Birwa became one of the few successful students to pass the CA final exams.

"My parents are blind but they never used me as a crutch. Never did my father saddle me with work outside the home; nor did my mother expect me to help her in the kitchen. Both are independent. They went out of their way to support me in whatever I chose to pursue," said Birwa.

Damji works as a caning instructor in the Blind People's Association (BPA) while Krishna is a housewife. Birwa has been independent too, and was working as a part-time instructor in a CA coaching institute to earn some pocket money.

Now, she wishes to start her own CA coaching institute. "It is my dream to start my own CA coaching institute. I will practice CA part-time," she said.

Meanwhile, Damji and Krishna basked in their daughter's spotlight. "I have seen that most disabled parents end up burdening their children with the task of being their crutches. We chose to give Birwa the ladder to climb in life instead," said Damji.
