It can take pictures of objects, menus, signs, gadget blogs, etc., and then read aloud the captured text. The portable ‘Reader’ combines the latest state-of-the-art digital camera technology with a powerful ‘personal data assistant’ (P.D.A.). These components are housed in a custom-designed vinyl case that also contains internal circuitry to connect the camera and P.D.A .to operate as a single system.
The software is completely new in blindness technology, with several features especially designed for the device.The portable Reader can execute about 500 million instructions per second and has a memory of 64 megabytes. Above all, it offers the power of reading in the palm of your hand.
K- N.F.B. has been designed by ‘Kurzweil Technologies’ (U.S.) and the ‘National Federation of the Blind’ (U.S.). N.F.B. expects to release the hand held device in the market soon, at a cost of about 3400 (approximately Rupees 1,53000).
