Beyond Limitations

Forty-year-old Anupama (name changed) was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition. Ten years back when Anupama worked as a software developer in Uttar Pradesh, she moved around independently and managed all her work without any assistance. But it was around that time only when she experienced first signs of vision loss.

In the last three years, her vision deteriorated rapidly and Anupama had to make  a career shift. She started working as a Technical Architect. During this time, she learnt to operate computers using a screen reader software. Her mobility though became a challenge and she was now dependent on her husband’s assistance.

When Anupama called Eyeway Helpdesk for a solution, our counsellor sensed her hesitation to use the white cane for mobility. She feared what people around her would think of her. Understanding her apprehensions, the counsellor guided her on how important it was for her to use the white cane to function independently. Citing her own life examples, she managed to convince Anupama to undergo mobility training. She was connected with various organizations offering training on mobility.

To help Anupama cope with her deteriorating vision, the counselor also asked her to listen to Eyeway’s Radio and TV series that feature real-life stories, interviews, features, discussions and radio drama to disseminate knowledge about living a fulfilling life with vision impairment.

The counselor also advised Anupama to apply for a disability certificate so that she could avail benefits of government welfare schemes.

Conversations with the Eyeway counsellor brought hope and positivity to Anupama. She identified the training institute of her choice to get started with the mobility training. Now, she's also a subscriber to Eyeway's WhatsApp service and remains updated with the latest news, job opportunities and inspirational stories of blind people.
