Guidance for independent living
Twenty-eight-year-old Rahul was born totally blind into a middle income family in Latur, Maharashtra. His parents lacked awareness about living life with blindness. As a result, Rahul started his schooling later than usual. But he successfully completed his Class X through Maharashtra State Board.

When he came in touch with the Eyeway Helpdesk, he learned about the importance of pursuing higher education. After finishing Class XII, Rahul decided to take up Political Science in graduation, as he was inclined to understand the Constitution of India and further spread awareness about it.

He also completed his MA and in one of the interactions with the Eyeway counselor, he expressed interest in becoming a college lecturer. The counselor advised him about the State Eligibility Test (SET) and National Eligibility Test (NET) to pursue a career in teaching. Since the counselor had herself cleared NET, she also helped Rahul with acquiring the required books and study material.

With dedication and hard work, he cleared both the exams in his first attempt, making him eligible for the post of a lecturer. But due to limited job opportunities for this post in Maharashtra for persons with vision impairment, Rahul also wanted to keep a second option ready for employment.

He then prepared for Maharashtra Public Service Examination and cleared the preliminary round. As he waits for a job opening, the counselor recommended working on his mobility and computer skills because these are essential for any form of employment.
