Guiding the way towards higher education and independent living

Twenty-three-year-old Arjun Kumar is a resident of Gopalganj, Bihar. He was born totally blind to a low income family. But despite the sight loss, he managed to study through mainstream school till Class XII, with the help of audio books and scribe to write his exams. Since he didn’t go to a special school for the blind, he lacked mobility skills and could not move around independently.

He contacted the Eyeway Helpdesk a few months ago with the desire to seek higher education. Understanding his restraints, the helpline counselor guided Arjun to pursue graduation from the School of Open Learning, Delhi University. This way, he could study from a remote location with the help of accessible books and travel to his examination center for the finals.

During the application process, the Eyeway counselor closely guided Arjun with the help of cybercafe assistant to fill his details online. Once he secured admission, the team in Delhi helped him acquire all study material in an audio format including his textbooks.

Apart from this, Arjun was encouraged to improve his mobility as well as computer skills. Since he didn’t have access to a smartphone to support him in navigation and browsing information online, he was advised to apply for one under the ADIP (Assistance to Disabled persons for purchasing / fitting of aids / appliances) scheme.

Arjun was also asked to enroll for rehabilitative training programs with nearby NGOs in his hometown, so he could learn to live independently. At the moment, Arjun is writing his first semester exams, and Eyeway continues to guide him on various challenges he faces at home and at school.
