Job posting woes

Twenty-three-year-old Gayatri Pagar lives in Nasik, Maharashtra. She and her husband, Rahul are both blind. While her husband has been working as an Officer with Canara Bank in Nasik, Gayatri had more recently applied for a job.

She studied till Class XII and applied for a vacancy under the Multi-Tasking Services. She cleared the Staff Selection Commission exam and was offered a job in the Income Tax department in Mumbai Zone.

But between the long drawn process of applying for a job, preparing, appearing, and finally clearing it, she got pregnant and had a child. When she was handed the joining letter to start in Mumbai, she was a mother to a 6-months old baby. This put her in a tough spot as she didn’t want to move away from her husband in Nasik. She tried reaching the Department but got no replies to her mails.

So, she contacted the Eyeway Helpdesk for a potential solution. The counselor understood her situation and apprised her of the provisions of the government for persons with disabilities. One of the guidelines issued by the government favours the person with disability to get a posting in his or her native place of residence. Another guideline also states that if the spouse is a central government employee, then the partner is entitled to get a posting nearby.

But despite repeated attempts to convince the officials, both the Eyeway counselor and the advocacy officer concluded that the preference of posting had to be mentioned at the time of application. Gayatri’s superior at the Income Tax department told Eyeway that a posting in Pune zone in Nasik could only be considered if she first took up the job in Mumbai.

So, the counselor convinced Gayatri to pursue this line of resolution. She also urged Gayatri’s husband to support his wife in every way possible. Gayatri moved to Mumbai to take up the job, hopefully on a temporary basis. She is currently staying with a relative which is some distance away from her office. But she travels to work with her baby and manages to work with the child by her side.

The officials at the Income Tax department are working on getting her a transfer to her desired zone.  Hopefully, Gayatri can reunite with her family and get the necessary support in raising her child while earning Team Eyeway
