Reasonable Accommodation

Twenty-one-year-old Sheeraz Ahmed Dar was born sighted in Srinagar, Kashmir. The youngest sibling of his three sisters, the family wanted the world for him. Despite their low financial status, the parents sent Sheeraz to a private school.

But in Class 3, the sudden loss of eyesight came as a rude shock to the whole family. But they were quick to seek rehabilitation for the boy. He was enrolled in a state center where he learned Braille and mathematics. Once the parents found out about the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities in Dehradun, Sheeraz was sent there for further education and rehabilitation.

He then completed his graduation from a university in Uttar Pradesh. For post-graduation, he secured admission to the B.Ed. course in Jamia Malia Islamia college in New Delhi. Here he faced a challenge of another kind. Sheeraz could not find suitable accommodation for himself and he struggled to make it to college on time. He ended up also skipping a few classes.

When he reached out to Eyeway for help, our counselor made a few phone calls to his network of friends in Delhi. He was helped with temporary paying guest accommodation near the college. But more importantly, the counselor helped him follow the application process for college hostel admission. Sheeraz was also connected to a Professor who could assist him with the same.

He has now successfully got a hostel accommodation which will ease his movement within the college and help him stay focused on his studies.
