In March 2006, Eyeway had reported the launch of Wayfinder scheme in the U.K. Birmingham City Council. (See eyeway news for March 2006).

Now the system is ready for public use in the city. The Wayfinder system uses a fob to activate audio directions from speakers placed close to pavements around the city centre. 57 speaker units have been put in place, with a further three due to be installed later this year.

The 60 individual sets of directions were recorded by B.B.C., anchor, Paul Franks. He said, "It must be the most unusual request I've ever had - to record so many different sets of instructions. It's a fantastic scheme, and I hope it makes the city centre that much more accessible for blind and partially sighted people, locals and visitors alike."

The system provides the user with practical audible information that will not only confirm their location but also assist them to reach their destination safely. The system facilitates the movements through a trigger card that the user will carry. It will activate the speaker unit when within the range.
