HYDERABAD: The Telangana high court on Monday asked Advocate  General BS Prasad to be the eyes of the visually impaired  children studying at the government schools for blind  children at Darul Shafa and Malakpet.

The bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili which earlier took up as a PIL the the media reports that highlighted the plight of the children of these two schools, informed the AG about the existence of a Danish mobile app, Be My Eyes, that aims to help blind and visually impaired people recognize objects and cope with everyday situations. An online community of sighted volunteers receives photos or videos from randomly assigned affected individuals and assists them via live chat.

Senior counsel L Ravi Chander who was appointed as Amicus Curiae to assist the court in the case visited the two schools and furnished to the court the problems that require to be immediately addressed and also the ones that should be improved over a period of time.

The state too filed its report conveying its intent to improve the things in both these schools. Ravi Chander informed the court that the decisions at the higher level look okay but the way they are implemented at the ground level needs a drastic change and some sense of commitment towards the children who are lying in a vulnerable state is the need of the hour. The state in its report said that it has sanctioned Rs 65 lakh to improve the building through renovation and construction within 3 months. New staff like cooks, warden, watchmen, and teachers were allotted to attend to the needs of the children. Apart from maintaining proper sanitation on the premises and giving nutritious food to the children, the authorities are now supplying mosquito nets, blankets, sanitary napkins, etc at the two schools, the state’s report said.
