Two-day cricket event for visually impaired concludes in Srinagar

SRINAGAR: The J&K Cricket Association for Blind in association with J&K Handicapped Association organized a cricket tournament at Bakshi Stadium Srinagar. The two-day event, sponsored by J&K Sports Council concluded on Sunday.
A version of cricket designed for players who are blind or partially sighted and conceived by two blind factory workers in Melbourne as “blind cricket” in 1922 using a tin can filled with rocks. Soon after, in 1922, the Victorian Blind Cricket Association was established, and the first sports facility and clubhouse for blind cricket were constructed in Kooyong, Melbourne, in 1928.
The tournament played in a format of 15/15 overs was hosted in Bakshi Stadium to filter out the noise from the city hustle and bustle as the ball used for blind cricket is a special audible plastic ball filled with bells that produce sound once rolled on the ground and players follow the sound whether fielding or hitting the ball with a bat.
In a cricket match played between the team yellow and team blue, the match fell into the kitty of the yellow team, batting first team yellow piled up 202 runs for the loss of five wickets and their opponents collapsed at a score of 96 runs.
In the final match played between team blue and team yellow, batting first team blue scored 162 in their allotted quota of 15 overs while team yellow managed to score only 124 runs while chasing. Team Blue emerged victorious by 38 runs
Meanwhile, the series of sports events under special verticals of G-20 and My Youth My Pride was organized in the Bhaderwah zone of district Doda. The events in the disciplines of Kho Kho and Kabaddi were organized at Boys Higher Secondary School.
More than two hundred students drawn from different schools of the zone segregated into twelve teams of Kabaddi and ten teams of Kho-Kho participated in the event.
The Radiant High School Bhaderwah won the Kho Kho Championship while Sartingal Higher Secondary School ended up as runner-up in the event.
In the Kabaddi championship, Government Higher Secondary Bhaderwah won the title while Adarsh Vidiya High School bagged the second position.
In the other events played across union territory today, most of the playfields remained abuzz with cricket activities where local organizers have collaborated with the Sports Council organize cricket events under the My Youth My Pride module.
