Workshop on Assistive Technology for Blind and Visually Impaired

Workshop on Assistive Technology for Blind and Visually Impaired By Chakshumathi in Conjunction with Daisy Forum, India

Registration starts at 9.00 a.m.

Introduction: Till very recently, Braille books were the only savior for information distribution among people who are blind or visually impaired.  Still, in  many parts of the world,  Braille is the only means for reading for blind even though the production is costly and time consuming. Since 1960s,  Audio Books are also popular among the community. Audio books were originally recorded on analogue format and then transferred to a tape. Later, when the digital era started they were moved to digital 0format and copied to CD. These books were known passionately as “Talking Books”.

But these Audio books for the blind were like giving a sighted person a book printed on a roll of toilet paper – a really tiring effort to find the area you want to hear or repeat. For the first time in Kerala, we are proud to introduce Daisy Books for the blind and visually impaired community. Daisy  Books could be navigated by the user in the same way a sighted reader browses and moves around a printed book. Chakshumathi,  headquartered in Trivandrum is a part of Daisy Dream and a member of Daisy Forum India.

A not-for-profit organization, Chakshumathi is dedicated to bridge the information gap for the blind community and people with reading problems in India. Believing in Information rights for all” Chakshumathi is intent to produce Daisy books in local languages and English and bringing the network of hundreds of already published Daisy books from India and abroad through Book Share Club for the empowerment of the hapless blind community.

On Friday July 24, 2011, Chakshumathi is organizing  an one day workshop on Daisy Books at  Hotel Classic Avenue, Manjalikulam Road, Thampanoor, Trivandrum from 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. Since there is a limitation of 250 seats, kindly register right now to ensure participation. Admission to the workshop is free and the medium of instruction will be simple English. There will be also few introductory lectures in Malayalam.

One day complementary accommodation (June 23rd afternoon to 24th evening) and local transport to the workshop and back to the Railway and Bus Stations will be provided to those who come from other parts of Kerala.
